2001 Zafira

I can start off use of this area with an update on the OPEL Zafira I collected recently from Auckland!

It's a replacement for my wife's Odyssey, and is shorter by about half a metre, but still has additional rear seats if we need to fit in seven people.

I was looking at the 2.2 engined Holden versions (also know as Subaru Traviq) initially since the Odyssey was a V6, and I was not sure dropping to an 1800 engine was such a good idea. After hearing about some horror stories with the 2.2 camchains snapping due to a blocked oil reservoir, I figured the cambelt on the 1800 engine was not such a bad idea, and this was also the only Opel branded Zafira I could find - which sort of decided the issue!

Car performed well on the trip home, apart from some service faults flashing up coming out of Picton. Got the car looked at briefly in Blenheim and determined the faults were not major, so got home safely.

Only one key so had to order some new key blanks and remotes from UK since Holden wanted to charge $300 plus programming. I will probably still have to get the new ones programmed locally - unless someone knows how to do it - but the 2x key blanks/transponders/central locking buttons will cost about $75 total now.

I'm happy with the Zaf.... and my wife is ok now too.... even though I was accused of only looking for Opels! As if!

I see there is also a Zafira VXR - http://www.topgear.com/uk/vauxhall/zafira/360 ..... maybe next time! 8)

I trust you shuttled from the airport ok?
I did some reading on the 2200 cam drive motors too, from what I found it appears as though the oil spray nozzels that supply the cam chain are prone to blocking if the service intervals are not met. I usually service my cars a couple of thousand k's below the service interval so was of the impression that this wasn't such a major issue.

How did the 1800 pull out of interest? I've been looking at the Corsa GSi's with the same motor and wondering how they went.

I'd like to jump in here, if I may. I spoke to Neville about the car when he was here in Hamilton and at the time I remember him saying he felt the engine was a little lethargic. I had put this down to the additional weight in the Zafira because my sister has an Astra with the same motor and it pulls really well from low down. I can only imagine that in a Corsa, it would be a real weapon. I'd aim for a manual though, if possible (allowable by the wife).

Was lethargic when compared to the Odyssey with a bigger engine, Brad, as I would have expected, but I had no chance to compare with a 2.2 Zaf so that could well have felt slow too. Took a bit longer to accelerate than what I'd been used to.

Extra weight over an Astra, for sure.

Overall, I'm pleased with it.

How about this? No bodykit, but all the goodies, and an Opel badge too!

its a good size wagon in the back and very cool how those seats fold into the floor.
My wife has had a couple of Toyota Previa's over the years and making space in the back was always an issue, this looks a lot better than the Toyota set up.
nice looking wagon in silver (my favourite colour)

Funnily enough, silver is my least favourite colour, and it is only because this was branded Opel....and it was a good price ... that I decided to go for it! I got rid of my silver Monza because I preferred the red and black ones. My wife would have preferred another colour, and we checked out a blue Holden version locally, but it was twice the price, and only had two airbags.

There was a nice red one on TM with all the Irmscher extras like front/tailgate spoilers and sideskirts, all very subtle, and that is also twice the price, but was sorely tempted by that except for it being branded as the Subaru Traviq!

Here's the parts for sale in UK from Irmscher, and look smart, but too darned expensive!

Irmscher have lot of stuff for other cars too, so check out their website to see what is available ..... then find it cheaper somewhere else!
