Aw that's a shame dude!
It's been a great car though and you've treated her well, so I suppose you can feel good about that. I wish I were in the market

That's great my uncle in law is looking for a set of wheels.
I've been trying to appeal to his inner hoon and convince him that he needs a 6spd manual in his life.

Hi Steve.
I'm very keen on your astra. My missus is after a new car as she was hit from the rear last week and pushed into the car in front in her 07 pug gti180. Was really after a 5 door hatch but your car is very nice. Will run it passed the boss. Please txt/call me on 0211475856.

Thanks for the info gordo.
Just got a phone call today saying they are going to fix it. (Bugger)
We are still going to sell it though, as now we have decided to buy a 5 door hatch. I'm keen on an astra H sri but the missus likes the Audi A3. The Audi 2.0T has the same running gear as the Vw gti which seems to be quite popular at the moment.

As I say to everyone before they buy an Audi, don't. I've never heard anything good from anyone who owns a later model automatic Audi (or VW for that matter).

father in law had a M3 BMW then a golf R whatever 4x4 now has a Q5 Audi

have a mate that had the same platform Audi as the golf, think this is the same one your on about Jason.

anyway both the golf and the audi seem to have a healthy appetite for fuel and tires, the golf was traded at three years old with a wining diff for the Q5

my mates Audi had its diff replaced in warranty, then showed signs of the same problem just out of warranty and was told it was a $14k fix so he very quickly offloaded the car at another dealership for a new RS4 Avant.

I've quite a few mates with VAG products ranging from Audi S4's to Golf GTi's. All of them have horror stories to share mostly concerning shitty electronic gremlins and repeated warranty claims (if lucky enough to still be under warranty). A reoccurring oil leak here, failure to start there, erratic running, inability of service operators to diagnose reoccurring faults as labour bills pile up. I wouldn't touch a modern VAG with a pole, but then I'd say the same about a Peugeot. My days of Peugeot ownership were some of the most depressing in my life! How could a car that drove so well be made so wrong? My step mothers 308 was a bloody mess too, endless trouble.

I think Steve's Astra is a much better proposition!
Hopefully it finds a good home.

You get lemons with any manufacturor, the VAG's as much as any other, but when they pack up they may be expensive, especially with the smaller twin clutch transmission which, as has been said, has had a LOT of expensive issues. That said, the sister has an A3 wagon with the 1.6 engine, true (tiptronic) automatic, and has had no problems with it - 'cept it's wheels seem to attract kerb rash

Maybe so, but Audi's are the worst I have seen from all of the European marques. I'd never own an Audi out of warranty unless it was a very old one.

It's worth mentioning that we had a friend with an Astra that was putting out decent power and he had trouble with the gearbox (manual transmission). He had to replace it at considerable expense. Again, it wasn't standard by any means, but it is worth mentioning because I would hate to leave it unsaid and see someone unsuspecting have issues down the track.

Pretty much on the money Brad, any car can have problems, for me it's the ability to be able to fix them with relative ease and minimal expense. Just doing the clutch on my boys S14 and that's a car that the jappas never engineered for ease of maintenance. Getting the gear box out or in isn't that easy, needs a 90 degree rotation to clear the bell housing and it's a pure pig to line up. At least with the Opel stuff it's pretty straightforward.

You're echoing my views exactly there mate. I've never worked on a Japanese car and thought "that was an easy job" it usually turns into a knuckle skinning, deity cursing cluster of fury. One of the first things a car needs to conform to before I consider purchase is ease of maintenance.
