2011 South Island Meet - May 8th?

Postby 001 Neville » 15 Dec 2010, 17:25

Depends on what people want to do, really. January is useless with people being away, and February is busy for me since I've got defensive driving courses to organise, and will also be up in the North Island trying to do something for NI members at Galaxy of Cars or similar. Halfway through March already so probably going to have to be April!

So we can:
    * try Ruapuna again at the next Rennsport event (3 April), and include a faster drive round on the Saturday night if there is the interest?
    * or else doing something different like karting?
    * or is there a swapmeet at MacLeans Island sometime?
    * or would members prefer to try something else like a tour round Canterbury, ending up at a venue for lunch?

Some of the newer members had mentioned they thought it would be good to have somewhere to go for a sit and talk afterwards, away from the track environment....

We can even include an informal judging of the 'favourite' car? Would be with everyone voting for their favourite, rather than having specific 'judges', since that puts a lot of people off displaying their cars.

Hellooooo! Anyone out there!

Probably best to bring people away from Christchurch under the circumstances, although I understand Ruapuna did not suffer any effects.

    * Trip to Levels Raceway, Timaru for SuperTruck racing 26/27 March with Rennsport Racing too. Spend half day there (Saturday $15/Sunday $25) and then go somewhere else for a drink and chat, line the cars up etc.
OR

    * 2 April, meet at Ashburton for coffee, then a drive out to Methven and back round the country route (subject to weather) to do some Karting at the Motordrome, Templeton $30-$40pp? Means using a bit of the juice to drive round and the price is going up all the time
OR

*11 April, Ruapuna - track tuition with Playday On Track $100pp. http://www.playdayontrack.co.nz/format.html
Ruapuna only requires a Helmet & Clean 100% cotton overalls. I have found dry cleaners often sell good used overalls for $20 to $40. Motorcycle & other helmets are OK for Ruapuna (provided they are sound) & the cars battery must be secure but a Fire Extinguisher is not required there so its going to be easier for people to go to Ruapuna rather than Timaru which has stricter requirements.
OR

    Any other suggestions?

Ok, to get Chch people out of the city for a while....

Ashburton SwapMeet, 7 May
I'm told it is a very good venue and useful for picking up car parts. This event is part of Wheels Week in Ashburton. We can get some space together for a display if I know enough people are coming.

Ashburton Plains Car Rally, 8 May
Registration 8.30-10am, then 77km run inland ending back at Stonehaven (seeking clarification) near Ruapuna for display and some nibbles.
Entry fee is $20 for car and driver and passengers, and includes rally plaques.
Special focus this year on post-1950s convertibles, but open to all cars. Rally plaques and spot prizes. We should be able to park up all our cars together to create a display at the Stonehaven venue. Sounds interesting, with a wide range of cars/ages.

How about it? One or the other, or both?

I think the Sunday would be best for a "club" event, with the chance to display the cars etc, but I'm open to be there both days since I'm only 45mins down the road. You're a bit further away, Ken, so how do you feel about that, since the rally will end up back in Christchurch, and you then have to drive south again.

Good, Ken. See you there, or you can call in here on the way past and we travel up in convoy? In fact, if you want to catch up with Graeme Saxton from Dunedin, you can travel up to here in convoy too
