Opel to be reintroduced into NZ?

Postby 026 Nik » 21 Sep 2010, 13:39

I was having a chat with Dad on Saturday, it turns out that Holden are maybe looking to reintroduce Opel into the NZ market, badged as an Opel and marketed as a premium brand.
Sounds all very 1985/86 to me . . . .

Yeah maybe a fail again but just to know it's a possibility is just plain excellent!

I've had this in mind for a while, waiting to see how it pans out.

I read an article not so long ago relating to Opel and Australia in much the same vain. I imagine that if Opel gets to Australia, then NZ will naturally get Opels aswell, considering the Holden product, along with Chevrolets and Daewoos are all sold alongside eachother currently. I think the article I read was similar to this one

I was only just reading about that today (for Aust). It was very disappointing when Holden abandoned the Opel product & went down the Korean path. I'm sure it has been good for their bottom line, but certainly not the quality product which it replaced.
IMO it will be a struggle to take on the likes of VW, but would be good to see it happen if their prepared for it to take a while to become profitable..........
Cheers

Hi Guys,
The latest news from our contacts in Germany is that Opel is returning to Australia (Comfirmed) and NZ (Not Comfirmed Yet) as seperate dealerships. Opel Germany has just a few months ago registered the domain name <opel.co.nz> here in NZ. So it's looking more than likely at this stage. :)
This is all good news for all of us that are into the Opel thing, more so for us members with Vauxhall Opel Sport NZ. Would be real nice to see some of those OPC models over here? (VOS NZ) http://www.vauxhallopelsport.co.nz :D

I think we should all get an honorary invite to the opening of their first dealership. :D

Damn. Thats amazingly tempting. I wonder if they would consider enthusiasm for the brand as good as actual experience selling vehicles.

To be honest, I think I would probably throw a CV at the anyway if they were to open a dealership here in Hamilton, although that is probably unlikely to begin with.

And, I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here anyway.. haha

Very exciting news though, I hope it gets approved and becomes definite some time soon. I think the market definitely has room for the Insignia and the Astra at least, probably a small car like the Corsa and an MPV also.

Hell i'd consider throwing in product development engineering for a spot at the first Opel dealership... preferably in management somewhere. My old man worked for Opel in the 80s-90s so I hope legacies are appreciated!

No mention of NZ there, but it must be inevitable if they are going into the Aussie market.
