North Island meet?

Postby 001 Neville » 24 Aug 2010, 23:27

We really need to get a North Island meeting sorted too.

I was originally thinking of Taupo since it is roughly the centre of the North Island, but as the majority of members are north of the Bombay Hills, you may prefer an Auckland venue? It may also be better to combine with an existing car show rather than just meeting at a pub somewhere?

I'm 2 hours north of Taupo and about 1 1/2 hr's south of Auckland, so would be open to an Opel meeting in either location. Pub, not so much but perhaps a late arvo meeting in a acrpark so we can line the cars up, take a couple of photos and then have a beverage afterwards might be a good option? Trying to tie it in with a car show may introduce unnecersary hassle and I don't really want to show any of my cars. I'd imagine the same would go for atleast a few of the other guys.

Ok, don't need to be showing the cars, but would give something to do when combined with a meeting, like the motor racing here in Timaru.

Would be nice to have at least one major event a year in the North Island, that I can try to get up there for - and then you can meet in pubs the rest of the times!

Agreed, some kind of motorsport event at hampton downs might be ideal?

I just mean initially, to get some faces to the names and get the cars out there, why not just a low key event. On oldschool.co.nz we try to keep monthly meets going in each region. A bigger user base there to benifit from.

Possibly Hampton Downs, but there is usually a high entrance price for these motorsport events - I still need to check on Timaru's event.

That's why I wondered about a car show which would probably not cost so much (except for Ellerslie ? ) and would give more sources of entertainment for the whole family if members are wanting to bringing along partners and children.

I think there's a "Full Throttle Car Show" at the Manakau Events Centre on Monday 25th October. Does anyone know about that?

Auckland is fine, since I'm around here, but a bit further south no problem, good with either idea

As far south as Taupo, Jon? I wanted to encourage Wellington/Hutt members to attend if possible, but depends if they even look in to respond!

Can people use the poll vote system at the top of the page to express preferences? Thanks

Good suggestion!

Yes, we can consider track days, Johannes, if you mean taking your own car onto the track. Some people may not be interested in the risk to their cars, but might be happy to meet up and passenger in someone else's car around the track?

Good for discussion anyway..... anyone else?

Brad and I attend track days quite regularly, but I think for the first meet I'd like to find an open field some where where we can pitch a gazebo, fire up a BBQ and have a good old snoop around each others car's.

I think it'd give us all a good chance to socialize as I find trackdays a little hektic most times.

Thats just my opinion.

Agree with Chads sentiments 100%, trackdays aren't a good meet and greet atmosphere.

And they are SOOO many going on all the time, its very easy to picky back on somebody elses one.

Fair enough comment.

Would certainly be nice to have the chance to socialise and get to know each other for a first official meeting - the pub meet with a few of us last year (?) only attracted a few members. Hopefully this will encourage more enthusiasm????

I'm still open to having the meeting alongside a car show, even if we just bag a corner of the carpark together for a bbq? ..... just in case people get bored, or have family come along who need entertainment?

Anyone else?

Have I sent an email to North Island members about the idea of a meeting? I can't remember

Yes, this anouncement came through as an email, well it did to me at least.

I must say, not a huge amount of feedback if I'm honest. Perhaps another reason to keep it pretty low key to begin with, or tag along with another event I guess, as that should achieve a similar end result.

I met Peter (mantaspares) and I think another chap from the forum last year at Kumeu, which was great. Perhaps this would be a good option? My Chevette was surprisingly well received at the event also, so might be open to some members cars. It is definitely more of a "chrome bumper" type event though.

So what or where is Kumeu?

Some of our members also belong to the Vauxhall/Opel Sport car club in Auckland, so we could try and meet up as a combined club at an event since there is a lot of overlap? What do you think?
