Interesting read. I had to chuckle about the modied rear wheel-arches. The Eggenberger Sierras were disqualified from the Bathurst World Touring Car Championship in 1987 due to illegally modified wheel-arches. Dirty little cheats............

Cheers for that. It was Gary that I was speaking to, then he moved overseas ..... to Russia from what I heard!

But I understand he is back in the country, and this seems to confirm it, so trying again to track the car down and maybe Gary too! .....

I'm 100% sure I'm not going mad as back in the mid 1990's when I had a Monaco Blue C20XE'd Opel Manta GT/E Exclusive (E49 UAH)....I had an A4 size yellow & black photocopied SBD catalogue that advertised many exotic things like a thicker cast blocks and 2.4L stroker kits for the C20XE/C20LET engines.

This catalogue came with my RWD exhaust manifold and my MBE 912 ECU that I'd bought off of SBD to complete my Manta's 16v conversion. I don't know why (maybe becauase these thicker blocks & cranks/rods/pistons, etc weren't cheap!) but SBD don't advertise these items anymore?? Or, Maybe these 2.4L 16v's were just a fraction to far becoming too unreliable and thus now discontinued? :? :? :?

Now-a-days its only places like http://www.Risse-Motorsport.de in Germany that advertise 2.3L short engines for sale for these 16v's at a cost of 3,450EUR ($6.76067 NZD). I guess 2.3L seems like the maximum reliable capacity now available.

As I said earlier, largest bore I've seen mentioned anywhere is 88mm and 'standard' stroker crank is 94mm, both up from stock 86mm. Millington do an alloy block, available from them or through QED, which saves 19kg but'll cost NZ$6k or so - just checked on that and whereas the old illustration has Millington cast on the side, the new picture has QED, so may just be through them!

Thinking on it, could it have been the 2.4 litre Opel engine, as used on some race and rally cars?

But surely Gordo that 2.4L 16v's the Ascona/Manta 400 engine and thus based on the old CIH engine castings and not the more modern J-series family II C20XE/C20LET units.... :? :? :?

Agreed, because in the pictures the engine is very clearly an XE Family 2 engine.

I know, but was figuring reight engine type and wrong capacity OR right capacity and wrong engine type.

Totally a redtop.
Aparrently a 20XE head can be fitted to an X22XE block from the ISUZU Fontera, theres a few guys on migweb discussing this hybrid which will give you a 2.2L 20xe effectively.

Some discussion on the subject: http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/374978-x22xe-c20xe-hybrid.html

If you wanted to go down that route I would just use an early Holden Vectra B X22SE block. The deck height is slightly taller and it uses a longer throw crank, so is essentially a stroked X20XEV.

Same bore, so if you push it out to 88mm you'll probably have just larger than 2.3L, but I can't be arsed doing the maths at the moment. Its home time!

The engines aren't too exciting but I have heard that they are lower compression than the XEV (hence the 'S') and have longer duration cams. I guess they are just the same head, so naturally they will have a lower CR being a larger capacity engine. I actually forgot about the camshaft duration thing though, so thanks for reminding me. I might get a couple and see if I can get them measured up. Might be a nice cheap mod for my engine to open it up a little. Would probably be better off just grinding up a set though.

Ah, missed seeing a pic of their engine before - definitely 20XE based!

I know a little bit about the race car - from what I understand about it's race history the current engine was built to meet class limit for a series in Malaysia. Has around 340hp runs a Hollinger gearbox etc. and is a genuine ex works DTM touring car built by the Eggenberger Team. The engine in the car is definitely based on an XE. Vehicle is tucked up safely in Christchurch still.

Do you know where, Peter? Would make a good local meeting if the owner is happy to show it off....?
