Lotus Omega/Carlton in NZ

Postby 135 Steve B » 26 Nov 2009, 11:45

I had heard that none were imported here, I have always been a fan of these ever since I read in 'Wheels circa 1990' that these would mop the floor with one of my all time favorites, the mighty VN Group A Commodore.

I have a mate in Auckland who swears he had his 540i Beemer thumped by one on the way up to Warkworth??

Is he seeing things, Could this have been a Black VN Commodore, or a built up Import Opel/ Vauxhall Omega of the same vintage (I have seen a couple of these around).

Be interested to know if anyone knows if there are any floating around ...... as I will be wanting to contact the owner with an offer when I win Lotto  3 Super Sedans in the form of a VN Group A Commodore, An E39 M5 BMW, and a Lotus Omega/Carlton in the garage would be nice 8)

I'm not sure if my car would exactly thump a 540i, but it could certainly give it a good go.

As far as Lotus Omegas go theres a wee bit of imformation floating around here about them. As much as I love them, they just seem a bit too fragile. My bet is that you would be better to build up a replica one with an insane twincam turbo straight 6 with an irmscher 4 litre block and big single turbo with aftermarket engine management, all mated to the T56 GM gearbox and an HSV rear IRS. It will make even the all mighty lotus carlton look silly, once its all sorted :D <- just one of my silly ideas, but it sure would be fun to try!

You'll be interested in this one then..... if you're prepared to wait until 2012 to ship to NZ, when it is 20 years old!

Seriously, there was a rumour of one, but it could just be a replica or possibly an Evo500? Who knows what is tucked away in garages in NZ - I'm frequently surprised what else emerges.

Theres an EVO500 race car in New Zealand. It has been repowered by a C20XE apparently, but I can't remember the reason. Whether it was sold engineless or if they reduced the size because of class restrictions.

True, like the silver McLaren F1 Roadcar tucked away in a garage in Wellington (still- I think) as 1 example - I was lucky enough to spot it when I was living in the wairarapa back in 96' - I turned around and tailed it in my red S4 Rx7 turbo - not to be a clown, but to try and get a closer look. I got spotted and it accelerated away from me on a straight north of masterton like I was going backwards ......... :(

Ferrari F40 siting in Auckland occasionally as well??

Apparently down here in South Island, and has raced around Ruapuna. I'm trying to confirm exact location through some contacts ...... but it's like trying to nail jelly to the wall sometimes!

Watch this one, theres a company in South Auckland that builds some VERY convincing F40 replicas, they even sound the same as they use a twin turbo Lexus V8. I can't tell the difference.

Would be rather keen to chat to the owner about what components to source for 2.3L capacity bore.

So would I, commonly accepted maximum bore is 88mm, 2 up on stock, which gives a smidgion under 2.1 litres. Either a stoker crank or mis-remembered capacity.

I read an artical about the race car in a mag a few years ago I thought it was 2.2 but for all i can remember now it could have been 1.2 haha. I'm sure there is a carlton in nz because there was an artical in a nz car magazine about one as though it was in nz. After reading that back I realise all my car knowledge is from magazines.

Damn, tis' a shame as a 2.3L 20XE would be nothing short of incredible.
