Scrubbing out a petrol tank?

Have just removed fuel tank from Omega A sedan as the pump had failed, and now we can see why it failed from the crud in the tank! Have swilled around some (old stale) petrol that was in the tank previously, but that has not got rid of residue on the walls.

 Looks like it needs a toilet brush to scrub off, but not sure if there is a better way to dissolve the residue? Any suggestions?

It'll depend on what exactly the residue is - you can try a few different solvents or types of thinners and see if one of them is particularly good at dissolving the gung - or plug all outlets except the top and stick a half litre of degreaser into the tank then run a steam cleaner in it for a couple of hours.
